James Chan—Spare Room Tycoon. (Workshop/Book Signing)
Tired of working for someone else? Retired with too much time
on your hands? James Chan is the author of Spare Room
Tycoon, a book on the key lessons of successful self
employment told in engaging biographical stories of 40 men and
women who succeeded in starting and running their own businesses
from home. If you’ve ever wanted to “go it alone,”
this workshop will renew your enthusiasm and show you how to
develop the skills to really make it work. Dr. Chan is Founder
and President of Asia Marketing and Management. He has written
extensively on international trade, Asia and entrepreneurship
for many publications including The New York Times,
Publishers Weekly, LOGOS, and The Philadelphia
Inquirer.

Melody Armstrong-Haney (Workshop) Local bookseller,
Melody Armstrong-Haney presents an informative and entertaining
workshop: “Bibliomania: A Primer in Book Collecting”—a
comprehensive look at the nature of rare and antiquarian book
collecting for both pleasure and investment. Topics will include
collectible authors, first-edition identification and value,
resources for book collectors, humorous publishing stories and
more. The workshop will be followed by a question and answer
period, and all material needed will be provided. Melody is
the proprietor of Frog Hollow Books in Haddon heights, NJ.

Connie Correia Fisher and Mark Smith (Cooking Presentation/Book
Signing) Connie Correia Fisher, author of Philadelphia
Flavor 2—A Second Helping of All New Recipes from the
City and the Suburbs, hosts a free cooking class and
demonstration. Mark Smith, Chef-Owner of Tortilla Press in Collingswood
has three recipes in the book and will prepare his signature
Mexican inspired cuisine. Samples for all attendees! Book signing
by both author and chef.

Boro Book Club The Collingswood Library Staff
leads a book discussion of Shutter Island,
the Boro summer reading selection. The novel written by Dennis
Lehane is sure to spark a lively debate.
Thursday, October 7, 7:00 PM, Library
The Magic of Reading (Presentation). This interactive
children’s presentation is an educational magic show,
designed to promote the fun of reading and encourage young readers
to explore the library. The 45 minute show features tricks,
comedy, and books and is suitable for ages 3 and up.
Saturday, October 9, 1:00 PM-3:00 PM, Library
Book Appraisals David J. Holmes, member of
the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America, former
Collingswood resident, and dealer in rare books for 32 years,
will appraise books and manuscripts. Find out if that “old”
book you have is trash or treasure!
Saturday, October 9, 10:00am—Noon, The Retrospect Newspaper
Offices, 732 Haddon Avenue
The Retrospect (Tour/Exhibit)
Founded more than a century ago, The Retrospect has
been continually published from the same location since at least
1914. Stop by to see some of the old printing plates, woodcut
letters and memorabilia of the local paper’s early days.
Though no longer printed on site, The Retrospect staff
will be available to explain how the paper is published using
the most advanced digital technology.

Tom Burgoyne (Phillie Phanatic) & Bob Gordon: More
Than Beards, Bellies and Biceps; Movin on Up (If there
is a conflict with the Phillies’ playoff schedule, Tom
will be unable to appear at the Festival.)
Glenn “Hurricane” Schwartz: The Philadelphia
Area Weather Book.
Schwartz is the chief meteorologist at NBC 10. He is the recipient
of numerous awards including an Emmy.
Steven Keslowitz: The Simpsons and Society
Steven explores the world of The Simpsons as it relates
to contemporary society. As Homer would say, “Mmm…bookalicious.”
Solomon Jones: Ride or Die; Pipe Dream; The Bridge;
Keeping up with the Jones
Jones is a bestselling author of urban mysteries that include
a look at the oppressive, crack addicted world of Philadelphia.
Taking a different path, his newest book is a compilation of
humorous family stories from his award-winning column at the
Philadelphia Weekly.
Big Daddy Graham: Last Call… Remembering My Dad
Big Daddy Graham is a comic, actor, and local radio personality.
Lari Robling: Endangered Recipes: Too Good To Be Forgotten
Robling is a food writer and regular contributor to the nationally
syndicated public radio show “A Chef’s Table.”
Diane McKinney-Whetstone: Leaving Cecil Street
Whetstone’s fourth novel is a gritty story about a closely
knit West Philadelphia neighborhood in 1969. The author teaches
fiction writing at the University of Pennsylvania.
Jane Rubino: Plot Twist; Raise the Dead
Rubino is the author of “ Cat Austen” mysteries
set at the Jersey Shore. Her latest book includes her signature
poignancy, plot twists and offbeat humor.
Jane Kelly: Cape Mayhem; Wrong Beach Island
Kelly’s books feature amateur sleuth “Meg Daniels”
and are set in New Jersey beach resorts. Her mystery novels
are written with a humorous twist.
Therese Halscheid: Powertalk and Without Home
Ms. Halscheid has written two poetry collections and is the
Poet-in-Residence for the Camden County Cultural & Heritage
Commission.
Suzanne Cloud Tapper: Voices of Slavery: Yearning to
be Heard
Dr. Cloud has recently published her first young adult book.
Along with writing non-fiction and political commentary, she
has been a long time jazz musician, singer/songwriter and has
released three CD’s on the Dreambox label. She is an adjunct
history professor at Temple University.
James Toogood: Incredible Light and Texture in Watercolor
The award winning artist gives a step by step demonstration
that shows how a whole painting comes together.

Byrd celebrates this passionate, playful genius in a glowing
picture book.
Barbara Ware Holmes: (Ages 9-12) My
Sister The Sausage Roll, Letters To Julia, Charlotte the Starlet,
Following Fake Man.
This former Collingswood author has written several books for
children and now resides in Maine. Letters to Julia (1997) won
the ALA Best Young Adult Novel award.
Lisa Funari-Willever: Everybody Moos At Cows; Miracle
On Theodore’s Street; Chumpkin (Ages 4-8)
Funari-Willever is teacher, author, editor and publisher. She
is a lifelong resident of Trenton, NJ. Chumpkin was previously
selected for the White House Holiday display.
DyAnne DiSalvo: Uncle Willie and the Soup Kitchen
(A Reading Rainbow Book); A Castle on Viola Street;
Spaghetti Park (Ages 4-8)
DyAnne is a popular and award-winning author/illustrator of
more than forty picture books for children. She is the gold
medal recipient of the Irma S. & James H. Black Award for
"A Dog Like Jack.” Several of her books were Reading
Rainbow selections as well as Notable Children’s Trade
Books in the Field of Social Studies.
Gwyn English Nielsen: Torey the Turkey Goes Skiing,
Serendipity; The Dream Catcher
With a background in theatre arts, Gwyn has been bringing her
creative literary assemblies to schools and libraries since
1999. She will be included in the 2004 edition of Who’s
Who in America.

the ambition, snobbery, prejudice, loneliness and competitiveness
in a New England boy’s prep school in the early 1960’s.
Kick off the 4th annual Collingswood Book Festival with a discussion
of Old School.
Tuesday, October 3, 7:30pm, Peter P. Childs
Room, Library: Gordon T. Ward: Rediscovery and Inspiration
Along the Lewis and Clark Trail. This engaging lecture
and discussion by the author of Life on the Shoulder details
his entire 1,800 mile journey by canoe and bicycle to the places
explored by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark as they searched
for the Northwest Passage.
