Romance is Heating Up the Publishing World

August 27, 2026 — When it comes to reading there are millions of stories waiting to be heard and there is a genre for everyone. You want sci-fi? You got it! You want an action-packed fantasy novel with a little redemption arc? It’s out there! You want supernatural, cowboy ghost adventures? It probably exists. Needless to say, there is a story for everyone. 

However, in a time where there seems to be less people reading and more people leaning into social media absorbed by endless scrolling, a time where it feels like literacy is in a crisis. It raises the question:

Why is Everyone Reading Romance?

In today’s reading spaces there has been a rise in romance reading to the point where we are seeing more romance bookshops opening up, more romance books being published, more romance book clubs. What’s behind the rise in love when it feels like there has been a fall in reading. 

Dahlia Reign, a dark romance author, states, “In a world that often feels overwhelming and loud, romance readers and writers are thriving. Together.” Dahlia, along with the romance readers of the internet, agree that romance novels have created a space for people, especially women, to build community. A space where people can find comfort in stories without judgement. 

Others have expressed that reading romance has been a way for them to, “dive into their emotional self!” with reckless abandon. In the search to find the answer to this question, we have learned that reading romance is easy to absorb when leading a busy day to day life. Lots of readers like the ability to just fall into a story without thinking too much and enjoy the simplicity of the characters and how the story unfolds between them. Romance novels take you to a place where you can enjoy love, intimacy, and romance in its perfect form. According to romance readers out there, it’s just nice to enjoy the story of love.

All in all, whether it is the community and connections that are being built in the name of romance, the desire to escape reality, or the simple love for love itself, romance readers are on the rise.

Also, in the words of Dahlia Reign, “it’s a lot more fun getting lost in stories about delicious, emotionally complex men who don’t leave their underwear on the floor or dirty dishes in the sink.”
